Brian McGuire Cashman has literally grown up in the Yankees family. He joined the organization in 1986 as a 19-year-old intern in the Minor League and Scouting Department and now commands one of the most demanding jobs in sports as Yankees Senior Vice President and General Manager.

Over the course of his 30 seasons with the team, he has earned five World Series rings, including four as General Manager, becoming the first GM to win four World Series titles since the Dodgers’ Buzzie Bavasi in the 1950s and ‘60s. Notably, he has won his titles with two different managers — Joe Torre in 1998, 1999 and 2000, and Joe Girardi in 2009.

Mr. Cashman assumed his current post on February 3, 1998. At age 30, he became the second-youngest General Manager in Baseball history. In his first season, he became the youngest-ever GM to win a World Series, and with championships in 1999 and 2000, he became the only GM in Baseball history to win world titles in each of his first three seasons. A pennant in 2001 gave him four straight League Championships, placing him alongside Hall of Fame Yankees General Managers Ed Barrow (1936-39, four) and George Weiss (1949-53, five) as the only GMs in Baseball history to win four-or-more straight league titles at any point in their careers.

Among his peers, Mr. Cashman has achieved unparalleled success while carrying on the winning tradition of the Yankees. His lifetime winning percentage of .591 (1,720-1,192-2) is the highest of any General Manager with at least five seasons of experience whose career began in 1950 or later and marks the best team winning percentage in the Major Leagues during that same stretch. Now in his 19th season, Mr. Cashman is the longest-tenured General Manager in baseball and is the longest-serving Yankees GM since Barrow led the team from October 28, 1920, to February 20, 1945.

In all, his clubs have earned playoff berths 15 times, claimed 12 Division titles and six AL championships to go along with four World Series titles. His feat of reaching the playoffs in each of his first 10 seasons (1998-2007) remains unmatched in Baseball history. In addition, the Yankees have won at least 84 games in all 18 seasons of Mr. Cashman’s tenure as General Manager, while the most any other team has reached that plateau over the stretch has been 14 times (Atlanta, Boston and St. Louis).

There have been three women in Major League history to hold the position of Assistant General Manager, and Mr. Cashman has hired two of them: Jean Afterman, the Yankees’ current Senior Vice President and Assistant General Manager; and Kim Ng, who worked for the Yankees from 1998-2001 and currently holds the position of Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations for Major League Baseball.

Various groups have honored the achievements of the Yankees and Mr. Cashman. With the club’s most recent World Series title, the Yankees were named “2009 Male Team of the Year” by the United States Sports Academy and were nominated as “Team of the Year” in the Laureus World Sports Awards competition. In both 1998 and 2000, the Yankees earned ESPY Awards — presented by ESPN — as “Outstanding Team of the Year,” and were named “Organization of the Year” by Baseball America in 1998 and by USA Today in 1999.

Mr. Cashman has been honored as “Executive of the Year” four times: by the Boston Chapter of the BBWAA in 2000 and 2009; and in 1999 and 2003 by the New Jersey Sportswriters’ Association. In 2001, he received his third consecutive “40 Under 40” Award presented by Street & Smith’s Sports Business Journal to recognize the top 40 people under the age of 40 who have made the greatest impact in the sports business industry. He has since been inducted into the publication’s “40 Under 40” Hall of Fame. In 2003, Mr. Cashman was honored by the Latino Sports Writers and Broadcasters Association with their annual “Latino Achievement Award” for his contributions to the Latino media.
